What does it take to build a retaining wall that stays put?
Retaining wall construction in Indio means building a wall that holds back a bank of soil. Nothing braces the top of the wall, so it has to be designed so it won't tip over or crack at the base.
At Premier Indio Concrete and Masonry, we're based in Indio and build walls in the cities around it across the valley. Most people call us when a bank is spilling into the yard, when they want a level spot for a patio, or when an old wall has begun to lean. The price turns mainly on how tall and long the wall is, what it's built from and whether an old wall has to come out first. The schedule depends mostly on height, because a tall wall may need an engineer's design before we can dig. When I come out, I'll measure all of it and give you an estimate for your own wall.
How we handle retaining wall construction
I plan what's behind the wall first, because it matters as much as the face you'll see. We dig out the bank and set a footing on firm ground. Then we build the wall course by course and keep it level so it sits true. As the wall goes up, we fill behind it with gravel instead of the dirt we dug out, and we give water a way to get out, so the wall only has to hold back soil and not trapped water too. When the wall is done, we grade the top so rain runs away from it, and we clean up. Our own crew does every step, we're insured, and it's satisfaction guaranteed on every job.
Sometimes the wall you already have is worth keeping. If an older brick or stone wall is only loose in spots, masonry restoration may be all it needs, and I'll tell you so. A new wall often makes a level terrace, and some owners want an outdoor fireplace there, so we take on fireplace installation as well.
Stacked concrete block walls
Segmental walls are concrete units stacked without mortar, and their own weight holds the soil back. For a taller bank, they can add layers of soil reinforcement that reach back into the backfill, so they suit most yard walls that need a clean, even face.
Mortared block, brick or stone walls
A mortared block wall, or one faced in brick or stone, suits a wall that has to match your house or the older masonry already in the yard. It costs more, because laying brick and finishing a face take more hands, but many owners want that look.
If an existing wall has started to lean or bulge, please call (760) 262-2338 rather than wait, because a wall that's moving usually keeps moving.
What happens when you call us about a retaining wall in Indio?
Here is how a retaining wall job runs with us, from your first call to the final walk-through, so you know who you'll meet and what you'll have in hand at each step.
Call or send the form
Call (760) 262-2338 or send the form, and we'll set a time for me to come and see the slope or the old wall. It helps to have a rough idea of how tall and how long you'd like the new wall.
I look at the site
I come out myself, look over the bank and the ground, and ask how you plan to use the space. You get an estimate for your wall, so you know the cost before anything starts, and I'll tell you then if the wall is tall enough to need an engineer.
Our crew builds the wall
Our own crew does the digging, the footing, the wall and the gravel backfill. The work stays with the people I sent, from the first shovel to the last course.
We review and clean up
When the wall is finished, I go over it with you and answer any questions you have. We clean up before we leave.

(760) 262-2338Retaining wall construction in Indio and California's rules
Before we meet, I'd ask you to look up your address on the California Geological Survey's EQ Zapp map. It shows whether your property lies in an earthquake fault zone, a seismic hazard zone or both. In California, developing a property in a mapped seismic hazard zone may mean studying and reducing that hazard as part of the local permit process, so your result can change what the wall needs before it's built. If your job needs a permit, I'll tell you at the estimate. We'll work it out with the city or county office that covers your address and pull it ourselves.
We're licensed. The state's contractor license board describes a masonry classification for walls built from masonry units, with or without mortar, and a separate concrete classification for forming, pouring and finishing concrete. That's worth knowing when you compare bids for a block wall and a poured one. Many of the walls we're asked about hold back a bank behind a yard or the edge of a raised patio, and we see the same kinds of lots on jobs in La Quinta and Palm Desert.
Retaining wall questions we hear in Indio
How much does a retaining wall cost in Indio?
In the Riverside, California area, a retaining wall usually costs about $20 to $55 per square foot of wall face. Where yours lands depends mostly on the material, from interlocking block to stone or poured concrete. On a poured wall, removing an old one, building a curve, going above 3 ft. or working in difficult soil adds cost. I'll measure your wall at the estimate and price it for you.
When does a retaining wall need an engineer?
One trade guide says concrete, masonry and block walls taller than 5 ft. should be designed by a qualified engineer. That's why I ask how tall you want the wall on my first visit, so you can plan for an engineer's design early if you need one.
What causes a retaining wall to lean or fail?
Water is usually behind it, because wet soil raises the chance of a wall sliding or tipping over. Backfill that drains poorly, or a wall with no drains, greatly raises the odds of failure, so a sound plan puts free-draining gravel or sand behind the wall with drains that let water out. That's the part you won't see once we're done, and it's the part I watch most closely.
How do I know if my Indio property is in a seismic hazard zone?
Enter your address in the state's EQ Zapp map, linked in the section above, and it will show you. Please bring the result to the estimate, and I'll explain what it means for your wall.
Can you build a retaining wall on soft or sandy soil?
Soft ground under the footing usually calls for more than a standard design. One trade guide bases its suggested details for walls up to 5 ft. on dense, coarse-grained soil, not loose or soft sand, peat or clay. If I find soft ground at your site, I'll tell you, and that's often the point where an engineer gets involved.
What should I ask about a wood retaining wall made from landscape ties?
Ask whether the wood is treated against rot, because a trade guide says the ties in a crib wall must be. A crib wall works like a gravity wall, with the earth packed inside the crib holding back the soil behind it.
Other masonry work that pairs with a wall
If an older brick or stone wall on your property has loose mortar or worn faces, restoring it can keep the look you have without starting over.
If you'll be spending evenings out in the yard, a fireplace built from the same block or stone ties the wall and the sitting area together.
