Indio homes and yards as we see them

Indio is the largest city in the Coachella Valley and one of the fastest growing, and our work here shows both sides of that. On older streets we're fixing block walls, brick planters and chimneys that have stood for decades, and on newer streets we're often building the first wall or paver driveway on a yard that's still bare dirt. We do the same kinds of jobs next door in Coachella, Bermuda Dunes and La Quinta.

That mix shapes how we work. On an older wall the repair has to match the mortar and brick already there, and on a new lot the footing and base we put in the ground matter more than anything you'll see when it's done.

What sun, sand and sprinklers do to Indio masonry

  • Desert sun bakes the caps and top rows of block and brick walls, so on older Indio walls those are usually the first places to crack.
  • Much of the ground here is sandy, and a footing or paver base that wasn't dug deep and packed firm usually settles until the wall cracks or the driveway dips.
  • Sprinklers that hit a wall every day leave white mineral crust and wear down the mortar near the ground, so the base of a wall is where I look first.

Masonry services for Indio homes

  • Foundation repair

When a crack runs up a stucco wall or a door starts to stick, we find where the footing moved and repair only that section.

  • Chimney repair

Older Indio fireplaces often sit unused for months, so loose bricks, a cracked cap or open joints go unnoticed. We repair them before you light the next fire.

  • Tuckpointing

On older brick fronts and planters where runs of mortar have gone soft, we grind out the joints and repack them with mortar matched to the original color.

  • Brick repair

Cracked, flaking or loose bricks on a wall, step or planter get cut out and replaced with brick close in size and color, so it's hard to spot.

  • Driveway pavers

Pavers suit Indio driveways because single stones can be lifted and reset, but they only stay level when the base under them is dug out and packed firm.

  • Retaining wall construction

Where a yard steps down to a neighbor's lot, we build retaining walls on a solid footing with drainage behind, because trapped water is what pushes walls over.

  • Masonry restoration

For an older home whose brick, block or stone has worn unevenly, we restore it, fixing joints, broken pieces and caps so it keeps its original look.

  • Fireplace installation

For a new fireplace indoors or a patio fire feature for cool desert evenings, we build the firebox and surround in brick or stone to suit the space.

  • Stone veneer installation

We set stone veneer, thin stone fixed to an existing wall, on stucco columns, house fronts and fireplaces, preparing the backing first because that's what holds it.

  • Concrete block walls

Block walls line many Indio back yards, and we build new ones or repair cracked and leaning runs, starting with the footing because that's usually where trouble starts.

  • Foundation block wall installation

For a room addition, garage or raised floor, we lay the block foundation walls that carry the building above, set on footings sized for the load and soil.

  • Outdoor kitchen masonry

For a back-yard kitchen, we build the grill island and counters in block, then face them in stone, brick or stucco to match the house.

  • Walkway construction

Walkways to the front door or along a side yard get a packed base and firm edges, so they hold up where sprinklers soak the ground.

  • Brick wall installation

For a garden wall, planter or entry wall in brick, we set the footing, lay straight rows and finish the joints so it looks clean from the street.

  • Stone masonry

Natural stone suits desert landscaping here, and we lay it in walls, steps, columns and planters, fitting each piece by hand so the weight sits where it should.

  • Brick pointing

If only a few joints have cracked or washed out, we point just those spots, filling them with matching mortar so the patch blends in.

Indio masonry questions we hear most

Does my masonry project need a building permit in Indio?

Most new walls and many repairs do, because the city's Building & Safety Division issues permits for any structure that's built, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved or demolished, and the permit has to come before any work starts. The city suggests calling or visiting the division before you begin. If your job needs one, I'll tell you at the estimate, and we'll work it out with the city and pull the permit ourselves.

Can I build a short garden wall in Indio without a permit?

The city's permit FAQ says a fence or a non-retaining masonry wall no more than 2 feet tall, measured from the finished ground to the top of the wall, needs no permit. A retaining wall that height is also exempt unless it holds back a slope or carries an added load above it, and every other wall or fence needs a building permit. Most yard and privacy walls are taller than that, so I'll measure what you have in mind and tell you where it falls.

How do I apply for a building permit in Indio?

Permit applications in Indio are filed online through the city's CSS Portal, where an owner can also track and manage a permit once it's in. The division's page says every building permit application submits three copies of plans, and a contractor pulling the permit brings proof of a state license, a current city business license and workers' compensation details. When your job needs one, we file it ourselves.

Does a masonry contractor need a state license and a city business license in Indio?

Yes, a contractor doing real wall or repair work in Indio needs both. The state contractor board, CSLB, requires a current license on any job that needs a building permit, uses employees, or comes to $1,000 or more for labor and materials combined, and a bigger job can't be split up to stay under that. The City of Indio also requires a business license of anyone doing business in the city, including contractors based elsewhere, and we're licensed and insured.

How much does a block wall or masonry repair cost in Indio?

The price comes down to the size of the job and what's under it, so I won't guess at a number before I've seen it. Length and height, block versus brick or stone, how deep the footing goes, tearing out an old wall, access to the back yard, and whether the job needs a permit and plans all move it. Fixing only the section that failed usually costs less than replacing a whole run, and I'll tell you when that's all you need and put your figure in the estimate.

How long does it take to build a block wall in Indio?

On a new wall, the schedule starts with the permit, because the city wants it issued before any work begins, and after that it turns on the wall's length, how deep the footing goes and the finish you pick. Footings and grout need time to set before the next stage, so a wall goes up in steps rather than all at once. I'll lay out what your schedule turns on when I come out.
